Founded in 1991, the SJU Industrial Management Research Institute has been contributing extensively to regional economic development and enhancement of industrial competitiveness through industry-academic research, academic events and publications in academic journals (industrial management research) in various fields such as economics, management, accounting, tourism, and industrial information.

Northern Agricultural Research Institute

The Northern Agricultural Research Institute aims to establish and pursue academic research and practical measures in relation to examining problems in the northern agricultural sector, including North Korea, China, and Russia, developing related theories, and promoting agricultural exchanges with the north.

Life Science Research Institute

The objective of the Life Science Research Institute is to conduct and support general basic and applied research on life activities, natural phenomena, and flora and fauna. As a university-affiliated research institute, it aims to contribute to the development of agriculture and animal husbandry industries and the conservation of the ecosystem in the Gangwon-do region.

Institute of Environmental Science and Technology

The Institute of Environmental Science and Technology strives to develop clean energy technologies such as solar, wind, marine, geothermal, and bio energy for the restoration and protection of ecosystems, carry out research on water in relation to water pollution prevention and reuse of wastewater, and develop technologies related to eco-friendly agriculture, soil pollution, and waste treatment.

Disaster Prevention Research Institute

Disaster Prevention Research Institute

The objective of the Disaster Prevention Research Institute is to set forth measures for disaster prevention, mitigation, and response appropriate to regional characteristics, based on professional and systematic research, to further advance disaster prevention and safety management technologies by promoting industry-academic cooperation and cooperation among different sectors, regions, and countries in research, and to carry out research aimed at maximizing the utility of information networks. The institute also endeavors to play a key role in deriving engineering and policy measures for disaster prevention to promote safety, eliminate obstacles to industrial activities, and improve the efficiency of local investment in disaster prevention.

Institute of Korean Medicine

Institute of Korean Medicine

The Institute of Korean Medicine aims to contribute to the academic advancement of Korean medicine (traditional Korean medicine) based on systematic and in-depth research on matters related to the development and promotion of Korean medicine. Research is carried out in the fields of Korean medicine classics and history, physiology, pathology, meridians, herbal medicine, herbal formula, preventive medicine, diagnostic therapy equipment, acupuncture and clinical medicine. In addition, the institute also fulfills its objectives by performing research on medical systems and policy development and comparative research on Eastern and Western medicine and pursuing exchanges and cooperation with domestic and foreign research institutes.

Institute of Health Science

Today, a substantial importance is placed on health individually and as a society. With countries around the world seeking to promote healthcare and welfare administration, the interest in public healthcare and medical services has surged. The College of Health Science and the Institute of Health Science at SJU were incepted in line with this trend. The Institute of Health Science, in particular, aims to explore current issues and topics and effectively integrate practical and academic elements of health science disciplines explored in the Department of Food and Nutrition, Department of Nursing, Department of Business Administration in Healthcare, Department of Korean Medicine Engineering, Department of Pharmaceutical Engineering, Department of Physical Therapy, Department of Clinical Pathology, and so on. With the National Health Insurance Service, Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service, Korean Red Cross, and the Korea Veterans Welfare Medical Corporation, and Korea Veterans Health Service relocating to Wonju Inno City, the Institute of Health Science at SJU now has more work to undertake, and it is seeking to fulfill its role by pursuing academic activities in areas related to the aforementioned public institutions to better promote public health and the advancement of SJU.

Institute of the Arts, Sports and Culture

The Institute of the Arts, Sports and Culture consists of the Arts Division and the Sports Division, with the former contributing to the advancement of design and handicrafts through creative and in-depth research to be better prepared for the changes in the arts. The Sports Division, on the other hand, is contributing to the advancement of sports and physical education by researching diverse theories and practices related to the field.

The Institute of Tourism and Culture observes and analyzes the phenomena in the tourism and cultural sectors and builds the theoretical and methodological framework to make accurate predictions. It is also laying the groundwork for academic research to help establish related policies and plans.

Institute of the Humanities and Social Sciences

The Institute of the Humanities and Social Sciences was founded in order to carry out academic research and propose practical measures to promote the local community, in addition to conducting research and development of theories in the field of the humanities and social sciences. The main activities of the institute include research and surveys on issues concerning the humanities and social sciences and hosting research presentations and conferences.

Institute of Democratic Society Policy Research

Institute of Democratic Society Policy Research

The Institute of Democratic Society Policy Research was founded by Sangji University, Songkonghoe University, and Hanshin University on November 10, 2000, in accordance with an agreement on the formation of a democratic university consortium signed by the three universities on November 19, 1999. The Institute of Democratic Society Policy Research serves to promote inter-university, inter-disciplinary research, through which it proposes policies that can help Korean society achieve advancement of democracy.

Institute of Cooperatives and Social Economy

Institute of Cooperatives and Social Economy

The Institute of Cooperatives and Social Economy was incepted in 2008 for the purpose of carrying out research on cooperatives and social economy. The institute is characterized by the fact that it draws participation from the professors at SJU and the working-level staff of consumers’ cooperatives, credit unions, agricultural producers’ organizations, consumer organizations, and so on in Wonju, as researchers and steering committee members. The institute has mainly carried out education programs to nurture entrepreneurs for social enterprises, in addition to undertaking research projects related to local food.

Institute of Counseling Education

Institute of Counseling Education

Established as the Military Counseling Research Institute in April 2009, it was renamed as the Institute of Counseling Education in January 2010. It runs a one-year internship program, arranging some 20 students wishing to acquire qualification certificates related to counseling to work as interns at counseling centers, and provides education and training on counseling. It also holds counseling seminars and case presentations around ten times a year.
